Today, I'm going to discuss The Liberation of Aunt Jemima by Betye Saar. I recall seeing a photo of this artwork in a textbook during my art appreciation class in community college. Aunt Jemima has been known as a degrading stereotype of black women. However, the Black Power fist and the gun to me are symbols that say, "I am not going to take it anymore!" Recently, I learned that Saar was a part of the Black Arts Movement. I will make a post of this art movement in the later time. Hey! I might even pick out an visual artist or more from the Black Arts Movement and discuss his or her or they artwork.
