 I was looking a painting to post for this Thanksgiving holiday. Whenever I think about Thanksgiving, the painting that comes to mind for me is Norman Rockwell's Freedom From Want . One painting in particular stood out to me the most was African American painter, Henry Ossawa Tanner's,  Thankful Poor . When I first saw this painting, it reminds me of the shortages that have been going on lately. It has not been the first time in history where a Thanksgiving had to face shortages. There arew people who are lucky to have food to eat at all. Even though the grandfather and the grandson do not have much, they are thankful for what they have. As we should be.  Believe it or not there are two artworks called American Gothic. While on is a painting by Grant Wood, the other is a photograph by Gordon Parks . They both have different meanings as well. I would to cover both these artworks on this post. So, this is a two for one post today.  I do not know when I was the very first time I saw this painting. To me, I first thought it was just rural scene with a farmer and his wife. More details about this painting came to me as I got older. It turned out the models were the artist's sister, Nan Wood Graham and the artist's dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby. I had should a hard time trying to decide and pick out an artwork from the artist Jackson Pollock. He was known for his Abstract Expressionist works. But the good news is that I've finally found one.  I first learned about Pollock and Abstract Expression in an Early Modern course in university. This painting is one of most expensive paintings of all time. Since it is International Women's Month, I would like to post about one of my female visual artists :the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). In my opinion, I think that Kahlo was the inventor of the selfie. Her paintings are as well known as her unibrow. Even though her paintings are categorized as being Surrealist, she did not see it that way. She did not paint dreams. She painted her own reality. I had so much trouble trying to pick a painting I want put on this post. So, I finally decided to post one of my favorites from her: Las Dos Fridas or The Two Fridas. This painting was created in 1939 while her and Diego Rivera were divorcing. The clouds remind me of the pain was pain. The exposed heart of the Frida in the white dress looks like a broken heart. The second Frida depicts a Frida filled with life. I loved how this painting was depicted in 2002's Frida starring Selma Hayek. Check it out sometime. Anyway! Since this is Black History Month, I would like to discuss an artwork from one of my favorite Black artists. Today, I will discussing Romare Bearden. Romare Bearden was a twentieth centry visual artist who was known for his collages and photomontage compsitions. One of the favorite artworks to do is collages! Even though his collages remind me of the Harlem Renaissance, started his collages in the mid-1960s. I had to much trouble trying to pick out an artwork to display on this post. So, I'm going to post the artist himself. HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!

  Today, I am going to discuss Freedom from Want by Norman Rockwell. It also known as Thanksgiving Picture o r I'll Be Home for Christmas . It was part of Rockwell's Four Freedoms series.  Growing up until now, I have seen this painting on ads during Thanksgiving and Christmas time. There have been so many parodies of this classic, American painting. Even 2020 has been a rough year, this painting has been created during World War II. Another rough time in history. This painting reminds of what the holidays is all about. It is about sharing, caring and loving. Happy Holidays!   Today, I'm going to discuss The Liberation of Aunt Jemima by Betye Saar. I recall seeing a photo of this artwork in a textbook during my art appreciation class in community college. Aunt Jemima has been known as a degrading stereotype of black women. However, the Black Power fist and the gun to me are symbols that say, "I am not going to take it anymore!" Recently, I learned that Saar was a part of the Black Arts Movement. I will make a post of this art movement in the later time. Hey! I might even pick out an visual artist or more from the Black Arts Movement and discuss his or her or they artwork.
